I've been away working all week and so when I got home yesterday I was pretty keen to pick up the combination box that I'd ordered from Amazon including an Xbox Live starter kit and a LinkSys WGA54G wireless adapter which I was hoping would plug into the back of the Xbox for me.

In our house, the xbox is in the lounge and my wireless ADSL router is upstairs and, due to there not being any kind of phone connection in our lounge there's no way I'm going to be able to connect the Xbox to the outside world other than drilling some holes in walls/floors or getting it wirelessly connected.

So, I went ahead and ordered one of these LinkSys boxes which plugs into the ethernet port on the back of the Xbox and connects it to your wireless network without the Xbox ever realising that this connection is wireless. Microsoft has a similar solution up on http://www.xbox.com but, today, this only is sold in the US so I went with LinkSys.

I've spent around 5 hours trying to get this stuff set up today. The way that setup is meant to work is as follows;

1) Plug the LinkSys box into the back of an existing PC with an ethernet cable.

2) Run the setup wizard.

3) Plug it into the xbox now its configured.

The first problem that I had was that the setup wizard did not find the LinkSys box when I plugged it into my PC. To be honest, I'm not even sure how it was supposed to find it because there's nothing in the instructions about setting up any kind of IP stuff so that the wizard can locate the device. The device comes pre-configured with an IP address of 192.168.1.250 and if you're not already on a 192.168.1.* network then you're not going to find the device without some kind of miracle.

So, I reconfigured my desktop so that it could see this 192.168.1.250 address down the ethernet cable and used the web-setup pages on the LinkSys box to configure the box. To cut a very long story short, this took me an awfully long time due primarily to two reasons;

1) The green light representing wireless comms on the LinkSys box is documented as being on "solid" when it's connected to a wireless network. It isn't. It just flashes as data goes by it which is fine but the docs have it wrong so you spend ages assuming that the box isn't working.

2) The docs don't say that to reset the box you have to keep the reset button pressed down until the power light flashes.

3) The docs don't say that when you change a config setting the box resets itself (i.e. again the power light flashes for 30 secs or so and then it's back in business).

4) The box takes quite a while to wake-up from a power down or config change. If you don't leave it a bit of time you'll find you're testing it before it's ready to be tested and that's a problem.

5) The first response from the support people at LinkSys wasn't great in that they said the box would not work with any wireless routers other than the one that they make. When I called back after reading the docs that say "This box works with any 802.11g/b routers" I got a really good support person who spent a lot of time with me but ultimately advised that I return the router and get a replacement as it must be faulty.

For people who use this box in the future, here's how I would recommend setting it up (learnt over the space of 5 hours on a Saturday afternoon). This is especially relevant if you have a network with a none 192.168.1.* address range.

1) Plug the box into your PC with the supplied ethernet cable.

2) Change the IP settings for your network card on your PC. Give yourself a 192.168.1.249 address, subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

3) Connect to the config UI on the LinkSys box using IE to go to 192.168.1.250.

4) Set up your configuration. In particular, make sure you get your WEP settings right (if you're using it) and that the box reports that it can connect to your wireless network whilst you're in this screen. Change the IP address of the box from within this screen (e.g. for me I set it to 192.168.0.250 which fits with my network). Also make sure that you give the box a default gateway for your network environment.

5) Having set up your config, unplug the ethernet cable from the LinkSys box and power it off and on. Wait until the power light stops flashing and do a "ping -t 192.168.0.250" or your equivalent from a box on your wireless network. Wait a good 5 minutes before deciding that it's not working. If it doesn't work go back to (2) and repeat (2) to (5) until you get the settings right.

6) Once you're able to speak to the LinkSys box wirelessly, take it over to the Xbox and connect it up. Make sure you can still ping it from elsewhere on the network.

7) Now you're into Xbox Live set up which is a separate area so visit http://www.xbox.com/connect I found this to take me about 10 minutes. My advice here would be that the Xbox is just a PC but it's slightly harder to diagnose stuff going wrong on there than it is on a regular PC so if you can't get things to work from the Xbox (e.g. I couldn't get it to contact my DNS servers at my ISP) then what I'd recommend is to unplugging the LinkSys box from your Xbox and plugging it into the ethernet port on the back of a regular PC and don't put it back into the Xbox before you're happy that you can use the regular PC with the LinkSys box to communicate with DNS servers and the such-like that the Xbox needs to talk to.

At the end of all that you should be just about ready for a bit of online gaming!!!! It's not nearly as hard as it sounds if you get things done in the right order and you have confidence that the thing will ultimately work (which it will) - it's the nagging doubts part way through the process that are the problem.

Hopefully I've doc'd enough here to help someone else through it. For info my setup is the LinkSys WGA54G with an SMC Barricade wireless router and an Xbox. It's all (now) working just fine so if you have similar kit then you should have no problems.

I don't suppose you managed to get it working with DHCP did you? There only way i can get mine to work is with a fixed IP which isn't really ideal

No, I think I got it working with fixed IP in the end and I'd spent so many hours on it that it was one of those things that, once working, you leave well alone!

I got the LinkSys router yesterday. Hooked it up to Cable Modem, hooked up PC to the router, got Microsoft Wireless adapter for Xbox. Put the Xbox CD for wireless adapter in and it found the network right away. The whole process took me about 20 minutes. Oh, yeah and I am using DHCP, so I'm not sure what problems you guys had. I think the trick is to have Xbox wireless adapter to have everything working properly. And one more thing, I ran the firmware update for the router. In the notes it says something about fixing the connection to XBOX bug. I think the router is excellent value for the money.

I've got a similar problem, with the same configuration (a linksys WGA54G and a SMC7804WBRA wireless touter).

However I am getting stuck at the IP assignment.
I tried the fixed IP (e.g. .102) in the IP range allocated by the router LAN 192.168.2.100 to 199 and tried DHCP, but both in vain...
I can't ping the device wireless...

The strange thing is that the MAC address of the WGA54G is appearing in the routers status page...
I've tried with and without firewall on the router...
All in vain...

Can anybody help me out?

Thanks,

Tony

Tony: There are 2 settings on your router that could be giving you trouble. First check MAC Address Filtering. If it is on make sure the MAC address for the game adapter is put in there as allowed to connect. I've had trouble with other wireless adapters saying they were on the network, but not actually being able to communicate until I remembered to add the MAC. If that's not the problem make sure if you are using a WEP key that you have entered the right key into the game adapter. The firewall on the router should not make a difference internally.

Guys, I easily connected the game adapter to the network and it connected easy....

However if I am in a game lobby for too long chatting b4 someone starts the game, it seems to lose connection.

Anyone expericened this???

Also, if i keep playing etc....there seems to be no problems.

I've had exactly the same crap with this games adaptor as the original poster above -apparently not working out of the box on either my desktop or laptop, I was advised by Linksys to send back, just got a new one with exactly same problem (couldn't talk to PC when I run the setup CD).

I'm really glad I found this thread as it at least explains something about why that was, although not to my satisfaction really . Connecting using a wire to my router and going to http:/192.168.1.250/index works nicely though as my network is 192.168.1.* already. I can even connect to my Vigor 2600G router using the Connect button on the main setup screen, which suggests that at least the hardware is ok.

However, once I follow the instructions kindly posted above on how to go wireless , everything is severely screwed up immediately. No combination (and I've tried them all) of MAC address filtering on/off, WEP on/off, gateway specified/not, open/shared key, cloning etc. seems to make the WGA45G visible wirelessly. I'm running in mixed mode as I've got a desktop with a 54G card in it and a Palm Tungsten C which is 11g. Both these are quite happy wirelessly to date.

(I assume when the poster says 192.168.0.250 he meant 192.168.1.250 above, else this wouldn't make sense.)

Anyone got any ideas on what to do in this situation ? Help !

Sorted this out to some degree. Linksys tell me that
1) the WGS54G doesn't support WEP with non-Linksys routers so switch WEP off
2) if you're using MAC filtering on your wireless network then the MAC on the back of the WGA54G is actually the MAC of the ethernet port NOT the wireless card. The wireless MAC = ethernet port MAC + 1 (in hex)

Also, cloning need to be set off to ensure the right MAC is used.

Intuitive, eh ?

The connect indication I mentioned in my post above seems to have been false, then - bizarre.

Anyhow, I can connect to the web admin interface wirelessly now although the device I have the adaptor plugged into (a Hauppauge MediaMVP) still can't see the network for some reason.

wow....linksys are freaking tards....the documentation for this product is the worst...ok here's the deal for me. I set up this adapter to run on my network (netgear wireless G router) and through my modded Xbox. Piece of cake to set up initially, shared files fine with my pc and all, but one catch...the internet didnt work at all. Now i have 128 bit WEP turned on along with MAC filtering, and i had put the Mac address of both my xbox and the address on the back of the WGA-54G into my routers table. I had the wireless adapter set to the following settings (IP 192.168.0.23 subnet 255.255.255.0, Dns and gateway were the routers IP). The Xbox was set to 192.168.0.24 subnet the same, and the gateway and dns were 192.168.0.23....still no luck at this point. Then i allowed the Mac address of the wireless adapter plus one in hex, and bingo it works perfect. So apparently you need to allow both mac addresses to allow the internet to work when you have mac filtering turned on.

Ok I finally got mine working. I have the Linksys WRT54GS router and thought it would be best to just buy the WGA54G Gaming Adapter. I went through 3 of these and about 4 hours of tech support from Linksys India. They told me the first 2 had bad Wireless G something or others. They came to this conclusion not just because I couldn't get access to the internet but because the wireless G light wouldn't stay lit.

The 3rd and final one I got from Best Buy I handled myself (I had already gone through all Linksys' really pathetic troubleshooting baby steps twice).

Here's what I learned....

A) The wireless G light doesn't remain solid even if you have a connection to the router, it only blinks as data is transferred.

B) I could get it to connect to the router with WEP enabled but no internet. When I disabled WEP, no problem. Maybe I gave up to easily but I'm leaving well enough alone for now.

C) I only tried a static IP. Again I'm not going to screw with it.

Bottom line is it has some problems. Sucks not to have WEP but just use your routers MAC address filter.

It seems I have made a mistake in choosing the WGA54G judging by the messages here and other reviews I've read!
I too am having problems getting my Xbox to work with Xbox Live through the wireless WGA54G adapter. Here's the deal:
I have a Belkin 54G wireless router and combined ADSL modem. My current wireless network works fine with my Toshiba centrino laptop accessing the network from anywhere in my home. I am not using WEP (not needed where I live) or Mac filtering. Strangely the laptop connects to the internet and network fine when plugged into the WGA54G via ethernet CAT5 and with the wireless adapter in the laptop switched off. However, I cannot ping the WGA54G from the laptop?!... I have used the Linksys install wizard and this works fine, I can even change the IP of the WGA54G from the wizard as well. But the web browser utility just won't work, its as if the adapter has assigned itself some unknown IP address. When I plug the WGA54G into the Xbox via CAT5 the Xbox cannot get hold of the DNS server IP automatically and refuses to connect to Xbox live. I think its the WGA54G thats causing this. The UK official Xbox website is little help, in its Connection FAQ it actually advises against a wireless connection and to get a long piece of CAT5 instead, ridiculous! And a little underhand considering they market a wireless Xbox adapter in the US! Help! Does anyone know what I should do next?

I had a few problems getting the WGA54G to connect to my router once Mac filtering had been turned on. Finally solved the problems I was having by upgrading the Firmware. Definatly worth checking your firmware version if you are having similar problems to those listed above.

I also have the wga54g and wrt54gs router and have tried all the options above. I still can't get it to work and need help badly.

A few things I noted, when I changed the adapters ip to 192.168.0.250 I could no longer call up the interface.

Appreciate any further steps or detailed instructions

I've had similar problems. I have a WRT54G whichi until now I've been using as a wired router to a PC and 2 xboxes. Thought I'd move one of the xboxes to a different room with the WGA54G but the thing definitely isn't plug and play. I tried several option, left WEP off for now but I cannot ping the xbox or WGA54G wirelessly from the PC. 2 hours of Linksys support made things a lot worse, I couldn't even access the web when they'd finished with me!

Yesterday I had a minor breakthrough in that I connected the GA to the PC and was able to wirelessly browse the web. I then plugged the xbox into the GA and......nothing.

So the GA works and is communicating with the router. Does the xbox need to have the same IP and the GA?

Anyone know what DNS etc settings I should put into the xbox if I use a static IP?

Cheers

I got a LinkSys WGA54G too, and I'm returning it tomorrow. I can configure it correctly by plugging it right into the Microsoft MN-500 router. The disc will detect it if the WGA54G is connected to the router directly. My problem is getting the Xbox to recognize the network. So, as all else fails, just buy the Xbox Wireless Adapter and don't bother with 3-rd Party products.

If you put the static Ip on the game adapter you MUST but in the dNS servers from ur ISP in the Xbox config. You can find these on the dos prompt by simply typing ipconfig /all. I have this GA also and it works but it real buggy. My sons xbox at times drops them from the game. I called the support chat line and the linksys guys where like I dunno. LOL. Thanks god I went to school for networking but it still took me forever to figure it out. Static IP, and default gateway and DNS servers for your xbox. That is the key guys. DHCP should pass this thru the GA but it seems not to work at times and real buggy. AS far as the web management tool it doesnt work once you put it in the xbox for me. Even with new firmware on everything (i have linksys everything,....someoen shoote me.)

the funny thing I have with this device is, that it only works, when I enable SSID Broadcast. I have WEP enabled, and I think I can even enable DHCP. But as soon as I disable SSID Broadcast, the IP-Adress of the WGA54G and the xbox behind it are not reachable any more. I cann still see the MAC-Adress of the linksys on my AP, but IP is not reachable ... weird shit...

ok i got this son of a bitch working with WEP AND MAC filtering on a NON linksys router, so here goes

1- turn off all firewalls even the windows one

2- turn off WEP on your router (turn it back on later after this finishes) and turn off MAC filtering

3- connect the WGA54G via ethernet to your PC and then power it on

4- run the setup utility that comes with the WGA54G and click on internet gaming

5- write the name of your routers (aka router SSID) and leave encryption as disabled.

6- leave ip as 192.168.1.250 and subnet as 255.255.255.0

7- click next and save it

8- connect to your router via an ethernet cable (you wont be able to connect to it wirelessly as youve switched WEP off and the wireless card wont find the network) you can use the same cable thats uve connected to the WGA54G by removing it from the WGA54G and placing that end into your router

9- go to 192-168-1-250 and leave the username blank and password 'admin'.

10- click on the advanced tab and choose shared key (its usuall on open key by default) then click confirm or save or whatever it says at the bottom of that page.

11- go back to the setup tab again and type in your routers SSID, then click on WEP enabled and then advanced and type in your WEP in the key number you usually use for your network, then make sure you choose that key number as well at the top of that advanced page i.e. 1, 2, 3 or 4 and confirm.

12- go to the bottom of the setup page and click confirm again or accept or save etc and thats that done.

13- go back to your routers settings and turn WEP back on and for mac filtering its the MAC at the back of WGA54G plus 1 aka if its XXXXXXXX78 on the back of the WGA54G, then the MAC ID is XXXXXXXX79 etc

14- now with WEP back on your network should run fine wirelessly, take your WGA54G and connect it to the xbox via ethernet and in network settings on the dashboard make sure all the ip settings, dns settings are all automatic not manual.

15- it should work now!!

all this took me a day to work out, i nearly gave up but luckily one last try and i understood how complicated this shit was.
my network is the 192.168.1.x type. if your on another type of network than im not sure what you do, maybe change the ip of the WGA54G to one in your range instead of leaving it at 192.168.1.250.

ENJOY LIVE WITHOUT WIRES, ITS WORTH IT!!

I'm back to square one with the Linksys WGA54G. I've had it working since my first post but, to be honest, it fails an awful lot.

I use it to connect either my Xbox or my Media Center PC wirelessly. If I play Xbox Live games I find that I get through maybe one game before I have to unplug the Linksys and start it up again.

If I connect it to the Media Center PC then I find that any large file copy (music, pictures etc) normally doesn't complete because the LinkSys drops the connection so I have to start again and again...

I had to remove WEP to get the Linksys box to work (although the last feedback comment here might have got it working for me).

So...it's goodbye to the Linksys. I've wasted too much time on it. I'm going to look for another solution and maybe I'll post back as to how I get on.

Mike.

Re: changing your IP address. There's a reasonable guide up here

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/w2ktcpip.html

Essentially your machine either gets an automatic address from somewhere else on your network (using a protocol named DHCP) or you can just give it an address. This article points out the dialogs you need to use to give the machine an address.

Hope that helps.

Wow, this thing is garbage. I've tried to get it to work on 2 separate wireless networks with no luck. Frankly I'm sick of it and don't want to perform the 20-step procedure above (thanks for posting it anyway). The most frustrating thing about this is if you go into the network settingsin the Xbox Dashboard, click Advanced, and click wireless, it brings up a wireless status screen that states it is connected to my router, gives the speed (which fluctuates between 48 and 54 Mbps), and gives a signal strength of "Excellent". While on this screen, the "Wireless-G" indicator is flashing regularly on the Linksys. Once I leave that screen and try to connect to LIVE....the light goes dead and does not come back on. Also, this is my second unit that has done this. Back it goes to the store.

Ismail - Thanks so much for the above post, it saved my ass... The only thing I wasn't doing was clicking the "Shared Key" thing. Once I did that I was golden.

Note: I don't know if it matters, but I have a Belkin router, 192.168.2.1 is its IP, so to be safe I changed the IP of the WGA54G to 192.168.2.250 to match that. Worked great in Madden 2005 on PS2 right now.

To Linksys blows: I'd give you the following advice:

1) The Wireless-G light never comes on steadily even when it's working right. It's a known thing.
2) If you are going to try to set it up with the Xbox, make sure you upgrade the firmware - mine came with v1.06, updated it to v1.10 from Linksys website. I'd say forget doing that though, and I'll tell you why.
3) I had a WET11 before this a 802.11b version of the same thing. Once it's properly setup via a computer, it is basically transparent to the Xbox or PS2. Just relays information.
4) Try connecting the WGA54G to your computer to set it up. Run the Linksys setup wizard, give it your SSID and leave WEP off to start, then check 192.168.1.250 and it will tell you whether or not it's connected. If so, you're good, just change the WEP options like Ismail said and go. I'd forget trying to use the Xbox to change this thing's settings all together, to be honest. I used my laptop, which was connected wirelessly to my router at the same time.
5) BTW, Linksys claims that this box can be managed wirelessly by typing the IP into your browser. As far as I can tell this only works if it's physically wired to the computer. Once you separate, it's not going to work, but it doesn't have to, either.

Ismail, thanks again. Couldn't be leaving my WEP off.

I spoke too soon. Worked fine on PS2, Xbox no go, except with WEP off. This thing had sucked up way too much of my time, it's goin back... LOL

I was hoping for a G version of the WET11. I didn't get it. The WET11 is so nice. I literally ran the setup wizard to set the SSID and WEP key, unplugged it from the computer, hooked it to the PS2, ran the setup disc, BAM - instantly worked. I got an Xbox for xmas, hooked a system selector to it, and first shot, no config, it worked. Amazing.

I used to have a Linksys B router, but I got a Centrino B/G laptop, and got a good deal from Circuit City on the Belkin G router (great product, BTW, and well supported), like $10 after rebate. So, I wanted a G game adapter. Had lots of Best Buy gift cards, so I went for the WGA54G. Bad move. It's just not worth the time, people.

Check this out, though: when I finally got fed up with the WGA54G, I set the SSID and WEP key of my new router to match the old router, and plugged the WET11 back in. Worked with BOTH systems with no changes needed for a NEW router.

After spending several frustrating nights trying to get my kid's xbox working with the WGA54G, I stumbled across this post. It was very helpful. Here is a couple extra things that I learned...

1) Download and apply the firmware upgrade (1.10) from the Linksys site. This fixes the "xbox compatibility" problem, so that it can be seen and configured from the xbox. Once that was done (and following the advice here), I was able to see the Linksys from the xbox. However, it would not CONNECT to my network!

2) I went through the configuration as indicated by Mike and by Ismail, and still could not get it to connect to the network. I finally figured out that the string that I was using to generate the WEP security code, was not generating the same code on my Dell router as it was on the Linksys. I took the Hex WEP code from the Linksys, typed it into my Dell router as the WEP code and ... BAM! It connected and worked!

He is downstairs, connected wirelessly, gaming on-line as I type this message. Good luck!

I will concur that the documentation, admin, etc for this adapter are all quite crappy.

After about 20 tries, I did get mine working a little differently than people outlined below...

My setup

SMC7004AWBR router - dhcp server 192.168.1.x
MAC address filtering
no WEP

I simply could not figure out the +1 to the adapters hex mac address and get it to be recognized by the router. I turned the "cloning" option on, so the adapter would be seen by the router appearing to have the xbox's MAC address, which was alreaady in my MAC filters and working correctly.

Once I did this, I was able to connect.

The terrible performance of this thing is another project for another day.....

This was way easy to set-up if instructions are followed.

The Adapter has no way of knowing if you enter the wrong information when it says, "Settings Successful!" This is where many go wrong.

If your network uses the WEP security settings on your wireless router (AND YOU SHOULD), then you must enter the passphrase and the key from the ROUTER into the Game Adapter setting. You'll have to access your router from your PC using the information from you router.

On the adapter set-up enter your LAN name then enable WEB On the next screen choose the encription type 64 or 128 must match your Router. Open a web page on your PC to test the connection. If you cannot connect to the internet then the settings are WRONG.

The WEP provides security to your network. The adapter MUST comply to the security settings just like PCI and USB adapters.

You do not need a disk for this product.

Hold the reset button in until the power light flashes, then the unit will be reset.

Plug the LAN into your PC or router. Go to the web page
http://129.168.1.250
This brings up the setup page. I did everything from there.

Go to the advanced page. Leave the IP stuff alone. Set to shared. Leave the network type t o auto. Save settings.

Go to setup page, Set the SSID and the WEP settings, I used 64 bit. Make sure the WEP key is the same as your router.

Now, the conected status MUST indicate connected or it will not work. You should also see you wireless information in the available connections below. Once you see the connection notice, your ready to go. I then connected to XBOX and it work with all default settings.

This took me about 6 hours of playing with the thing to figure it out. the posting here were helpful, thanks to all.

Good luck.

I was able to get the device to work using the WEP 128 bit hex ; I needed to upgrade the firmware to 1.10 (it was 1.6), and Linksys was clueless about this fact. MY SPECS:

G4 (quicksilver) on a network consisting of (1) microsoft wireless base station 802.11b and a stand alone pass-through ADSL modem as a port. (I used a wireless laptop to config the linksys)

I reflashed the linsys WGA54G to a static IP of 192.168.2.2 so it was in the same domain as the Microsoft (192.168.2.1) I pointed it at the Microsoft device (gateway)

I then dicovered that whole thing regarding firmware, and fixed that problem, which allowed my XBOX to actually see the device-- how novel!

I set the wireless router WEP key aftger it imported all the other data from the now visible wireless node, and set up the DNS to manual, while leaving the IP on automatic.

Voila! It took an all nighter and 4+ hours of Philipino tech support.

Working fine with a 128 bit WEP key.

Thank you very much for writing up your instructions. They were very helpful.

have had all the same problems, trying to connect the WGA54G to a linksys WRT54G router and have given up after 10hours, i wish i had seen this before i had brought one.

it seem that the WGA45G is completely incompatable with it own kit, have brought a belkin network adaptor and it took 5mins to have it up and running with the xbox using a DCHP IP address and not a static one

My friend's brother lent one of these to me in a non-factory configuration, and I was getting nowhere in setting it up.

For starters, telling us about holding the reset button down until it blinks, was golden. Hard to believe the documentation would not mention something like that. I had tried resetting with power off, resetting as I plugged DC in, holding down reset 3 seconds, etc. etc.

Following your directions, I got it working perfectly in about 30 minutes, and that was with a dynamic IP address (well, it's static on the router, so I can change it from there), 128 bit WEP and a weird network topology. Without your help, I might have wasted five hours of my day, too...argh.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Folks, I didn't see the big deal in the hook up, but I also am an IT pro and could troubleshoot some issues fairly easily. I noticed that for a layman this thing would be an absolute nightmare to hook up.

Take the route suggested of using a wire to set the WGA54G up and see if you can wirelessly surf via that connection. If so, you're set on that.

Reading this post, I see a lot on the WGA54G setup, but little for the Xbox side, so here are some thoughts on that, in addition to some other things I noticed:

1. WEP worked immediately with my Belkin Wireless G router. No need to turn WEP off on my router and turn it back on
2. The IP I used for the PC and Xbox was on the same subnet as the wireless router. I.e. if you've got a 192.168.200.x range, make sure your Xbox has its IP address set up as 192.168.200.XXX. Replace XXX with any number from 1 to 254 as long as it's NOT the same # as something else on your network.
3. Make the subnet mask on your Xbox 255.255.255.0 (should set that by default)
4. Gateway for the Xbox is the IP address of your WGA54G device.
5. DNS settings for your Xbox will be either the address of your wireless router (NOT the WGA54G!!!), or your cable/DSL company's DNS servers. My Belkin becomes the DNS server on my network, so I set the routers IP as my DNS for my Xbox.

Thanks to everyone for all the posts. Despite all your great info, I remain stuck. I thought it was my router, Belkin Pre-802.11n, until I read the post from absolut kevster. So, I'm hoping he or someone else might have a suggestion for me. I get through the steps fine and the adapter connects to the wireless network from the configuration page. I should note that I have to use the Open System option instead of Shared Key to get connected to the wireless network. Perhaps that's a clue? Anyway, after I remove the ethernet cable and restart the adapter, I can no longer ping it via wireless. The ping worked fine when the ethernet was in of course. I'm trying to get this setup to provide wireless g to my TiVos. Others have reported it to work. Any suggestions on my I cannot see the adapter via wireless. It's pushing 3am now and I started this about 9:30. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi Tony,

Not sure what you're up to but 9F+1 = A0.

It's hexadecimal (base 16) so you count;

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F 10

and so on.

I finally got my network setup properly (see prior post for details), so I wanted to share here in case it's of use to someone else.

I spent 7-8 hours (till 3am) with the Linksys game adapters and my Belkin Pre-N router and I never did get it working. I called Linksys support and I had tried everything they suggested. Their final suggestion was to return the game adapters to the retailer.

I then ordered a pair of the SMC2870W wireless bridges, which I got cheaper than the Linksys adapters. They configured with no issues and I was able to get my first TiVo connected via DHCP (the Linksys adapter apparently required a static IP). Early testing of transferring a movie looks like the speed is greatly improved from my wireless B setup.

I did have an issue that I want to share in case it might help others. I could not get the adapter to pick up the wireless network after I pulled out the ethernet cable that was connected to the computer for configuration. It kept dropping the connection. Then, by fluke, I removed the other end of that cable from the computer, and the adapter picked up the wireless signal again. I cannot explain it, and it may be unrelated, but that seemed to the the turning point. That may also be what stopped my Linksys adapters from working.

I think I am set now. I can finally transfer movies with solid performance, and I can upgrade the security to WPA.

Got it to Work!! on a NON LinkSys Router on a 192.168. Network with 255.255.255.0 Subnet

Router (Gateway) Ip is 192.168.1.1
Home PC Ip is 192.168.1.2
Xbox (UnModded) Ip is 192.168.1.3
LinkSys Game Adaptor Ip is 192.168.1.4
Xbox (Modded)& Wireless Ip is 192.168.1.5

All the above can Access Internet as Well including Xbox Live!

Here is how

1. Turn off Everything except Cable Modem,Router & PC

2. Device #1 Establish Internet Connection with you PC (Make sure the Internet works)

3. Make sure your Router is setup as a DHCP Server(Usely default) and add the MAC address of your xbox that will be wireless, LinkSys Game adaptor, and LinkSys game adaptor +1 (ie if it is xxxxxxxx29 then adding 1 would be xxxxxxxx30) to your router's allowed wireless MAC address table(MAC Filter)
Also turn all encryption/security for wireless off for now, record your SSID on paper and make sure it is set to broadcast, and set wireless channel to auto

If you Don't have any other devices to setup then jump to step 5 for Wireless Setup

4. Device #2 Xbox(Unmoded) turn it on and go to network settings

Select Automatic for IP Settings
Select Automatic for DNS Settings
Select Connect --> It should connect if not make
sure TCP Port 3074 & UDP Ports 88 & 3074
are forwarded through your router to
that xbox's IP address (192.168.1.3 in
my case) See this site for Help
www.portforward.com

5. Power on LinkSys Game adaptor and select "In" if your wireless channel is auto. If not then just make sure this display number matches the wireless channel selected on your router (ie channel 1,2,3,4,etc.)
(don't hook-up lan Cable just yet)

6. Insert Game adaptor Setup cd into PC
Select Setup
In setup(somewhere)
1 enter the SSID you recorded
Make sure wep/security is not set
2 set it for static Ip(Not Auto)
3 change ip to 192.168.1.4 in my case
4 enter in SUBnet 255.255.255.0 in my case
5 enter gatway 192.168.1.1 in my case
6 Select the right channel (again make
sure it matches your router)

All the above will create Profile 1 on
the LinkSys Game Adaptor. If it ask to
create another profile same no. It
should exit setup and save Profile 1(P1)

7. Now select P1 on the LinkSys game adaptor

8. Now open a Dos prompt on your PC and type
ping 192.168.1.4 (or what ever ip you
used for the Linksys)It should return
something (Not Timeout) If not then
double check settings in step 6

Only continue if the ping doesn't time out

9. Connect the LinkSys game adaptor to your xbox
(Make sure the little switch on the
side of the Game Adaptor is set to
x not ||)

10. Turn on xbox and go to network settings
Manualy configure Ip and DNS
Ip = 192.168.1.5 in my case
Subnet = 255.255.255.0 in my case
Gatway = 192.168.1.1 (Router's IP)
Primary DNS = 192.168.1.1 (Router)
Alternate DNS = Internet Service
Providers DNS

11. Turn off xbox wait a second and turn back on and
try to connect (Again make sure the Ports in
step 4 are also forwarded to This xbox Ip
and the LinkSys game adaptor's IP)

If it don't Connect Power cycle everything
meaning turn off the router and
everything hooked to the router leave it
set for a few seconds then turn on the
router and let it sync with your cable
modem then turn on your Home PC, etc, etc.
Just make sure you follow the ip address
sequence like

turn on device 192.168.1.1 Router
wait a few seconds
then device 192.168.1.2 PC
wait a few seconds
then device 192.168.1.3 XBOX1
etc,etc,etc

This should fix it

12 After you can connect then you can go back and add in the security/WEP/Encryption settings if you choose!

Good luck

I read through this, and got some good Ideas, but in the end I figured it out and got it working in under 30 min. I have a LinkSys WRT54GS and the WGA54G game adapter. I have my Wireless router set up with full security, WEP 66bit, MAC filtering, ETC. At first it wasnt working as they said it would, even after I put in the proper WEP key and everything. Then I realized something, that the Xbox and the Wireless game adapter have a MAC address, yes I know DUH!!! well with MAC filtering turned ON, I needed to add both the Xbox and Game adapters MAC address into the filter list. What I did was:
1) Setup the game adapter as they say, plug it into my PC and run the setup. I set the IP address to 192.168.1.108 (I have my DHCP server set to give 10 Adresses with only 4 Devices attaching)
2) Shut that down and plug in to the regular network adn go into the ADMIN console of the Router.
3) go into MAC filtering and added both MAC addresses for the Xbox and Game adapter.
4) I powered everything off for about 5 min, Modem, Router, Game adapter and X-box
5) powered them on in this order with a 30 second pause inbetween each unit. Modem, Router, Game Adapter and then X-box WHAM! X-box live connected in about 10 seconds!! havn't had a problem with dropping or slowness yet, although I am only into it for about 3 days!

Its all smoke and mirrors getting this gaming adapter to work. Found the simple solution- make sure the WEP keys you're using are "case correct", my router makes alpha characters capitol- the AP generates them lower case... made them match and the thing runs like a champ. Not sure why it wouldn't work with WEP disabled.

Still can't ping the AP, but Live works

The disconnection: change the channel in your router. I had terrible problems even getting a connection with this abominable adapter until in desparation changed the channel from six to eleven. There are at times eight+/- networks in my area and most are on channel six and I think that this adapter must scan and decide on its own to try another network even if connected with my specified network and WEP.

BTW, if updating the firmware on the adapter, I do not believe that the xbox should be used for setup at all. Use it for information about the connection and diagnostics, especially the Y key in the status page for network information.

The setup is a lot simpler than we all think. Of course, I still can't get my PC to FTP with the EvoX dashboard, but as long as I can stream AVI's from my PC, that's all I care for.

1) Ensure you're plugging directly into your PC's NIC and not into your wireless router. Going via the router will cause setup issues as it is creating a loopback in the process.

2) Pump the latest firmware into it (v1.10)

3) Run the CD as instructed.

4) Once CD is done, open IE and go into the web user interface and set your gateway to your router's address (eg. 192.168.1.1)

5) Ensure WEP keys match (especially in case if your router is case sensitive as noted above).

6) Obtain the MAC address of the ethernet adapter, wireless MAC address and the XBOX/PS2's MAC address. You will need to enter ALL THREE of these MAC addresses if you intend to use MAC address filtering on your router.

7) THAT'S IT! Worked for me and I set it up in 10 mins.

mtaulty wrote re: Xbox Live, Wireless networking with LinkSys WGA54G

Here's what I did to get mine working:

1) Initially I plugged the WGA into my computer and ran the CD. Set it up with all the proper info: WEP / Infrastructure / Static IP address.

-- This worked great for a while until I tried to use the box as a Video Player from my server downstairs (through SMB) then I realized that the WGA was cutting the connection.

2) Pumped in the new firmware (go figure...good thing I checked online) Now to update the firmware was pretty tricky. since my IP was already set to 192.168.1.103 (no longer 192.168.1.250) I just plugged it into the router. I have a WRT54G, and connected to 192.168.1.103 via my web browser.

3) Once connected, update the firmware, double check your settings I enabled G-mode only! that way I was sure I was only connecting to the router on wireless G (54 Mbps)

4) Go to the help tab, update the firmware to 1.10 powercycled the router then brought it back up to the Xbox.

5) Watched a couple of movies flawlessly over wireless and logged the data transmission rate off my little server, avg. of 1.4 MB per sec. Not too shabby.

Anyhow that's basically all I did to get this thing to work great! Took me 20 mins to setup. heh and on another note... make sure your SMB server is configured properly before you start messing with the Xbox hardware, I had a few issues with mine... but I fixed those first!

I've been fighting with getting this thing to work for over a year. Constantly dropping signal. I gave up and just wired my xbox straight to my router.

So, now that I've got my 360, and I've moved into my house, I decided to try it again.

I've been using all of your advice on this page, but I still can't get this damn thing to work.

When I hook it straight to my NIC, it won't let use the web utility. Gives me a "refused connection" error. WTF!!

I'm going nuts trying to get this thing to work.

I've also got my Tivo setup wirelessly (using .11b) and it works like a charm, but I'll be damned if this WGA54G will work. I'm about to just smash the thing into a million pieces and go get the 360 wireless adapter (my router supports 11a).

Connected the xbox to the game adapter and configured the network settings ... worked like a charm.

I appreciated everyones posting regarding the Linksys WGA54G! Thanks.

Unfortunately though, after trying this naked and exposed (not me, my infrastructure! No Security at all); and not getting any kind of networking at all. (ie, WGA54G, on latest firmware; connected to my XBox,
(after setting up connected to PC).... NO ping response and couldn't even pull up the admin web console from my wireless laptop OR my hard wired desktop PC!
{YES it was configured for my WLAN!!}
Seemed the Xbox looked at the WGA54G as a wireless NIC device, (as per MS dashboard Networking>Advanced>Wireless settings); as opposed to a gateway to my existing network) ??

I took the biatch back to the shop, got my money back - then went to a different shop and bought a Netgear WGE111. [This unit was preowned and thought this was a real shot in the dark, but last one on the shelf and I got a 10% discount so thought it couldn't be any worse than the LinkSys mofo!! ;o)]

I plugged it in and added my SSID and 128 bit WEP key, and after hooking it up to my Xbox, I COULD ping, FTP and pull up the web console.

So in less than an hour, it's a permanent fixture in my living room, streaming movies and music over my WLAN... For anybody who is wondering about the Router side of things it's a D-Link 624+.

Works a treat with Xlink Kai too - Net gaming for free as it should be! (With modded Xbox support!! - Or any other consoles you might have! ;o) )
Check it - www.teamxlink.co.uk

It certainly pays to do your research.

Thanks again for everyone's input and the site admin for allowing a centralised point for discussion on a potentially flawed product.

Cheers!
