I happened to revisit the current list of feature suggestions in the “Silverlight Feature Suggestions Forum” and was struck by what a great list it is. Here’s how the list looks in August, 2010 with Silverlight 4 being the current shipping version ( and, according to the www.riastats.com graph, version 4 is the version that’s being detected by far the most frequently in the wild both for their stats for “all countries” and for the UK ).

BTW – I noticed riastats has Silverlight at about 72% for the UK

Anyway, here’s that feature list;

and the quality of suggestions doesn’t drop as you head into the second page of data and beyond - it’s well worth a visit from time to time if you don’t already do it.

But what's the point? Almost none of these suggestions or even get entertained. In fact, SL is getting more restrictive as it branches out to new platforms like Symbian and WP7. Taking the effort to suggest something is only good if suggestions are seriously considered and some of them are even implemented. Look at those Top 10 you listed? How many have been or will be implemented in the next 12-18 months, including across different platforms?

Hi,

It's not possible for me to say how many of those features will be implemented in the next 12-18 months as that would need to come from the Silverlight team & the information around future plans isn't publicly available right now.

However, I seem to remember that for Silverlight 4 a good number of the new features were driven directly from this suggestions list so I don't see why that wouldn't also apply as future versions come out?

That is - I think the idea that the team ignores this list isn't correct.

BTW - I disagree around "Silverlight becoming more restrictive". There have been 4 versions of Silverlight. As it went V1->V2->V3->V4 it did not become more restrictive.

In terms of mobile implementations - I think it makes sense that for specific classes of devices you're going to see some features removed where they don't make sense and some features added where they are needed on the device.

Added features? Accelerometer. GPS. Tombstoning around application pages. etc.

Removed features? Browser interop. Lots of security sandbox restrictions. etc.

I agree with Mike on this one.  I believe 7 of the top 10 requests were implemented during last release ( SL4 ).  Also, Scott Guthrie stated in one of the conferences ( maybe MIX10 ) that there were also dozens of requests implemented from entire list.

My hope is we will see more platform ( e.g. Android ) support in the next version.

These seem Petty.

Make SL looks and behave like consumers expect from a webpage.
